The Underworld
This project was absolutely glorious to make. It was an artistic interpretation of a soundscape created by a classmate. I can gladly say that it turned out better than expected as well.
EMPATHY
The problem that the project presented us with was "Create a Soundscape that allows people to visualize a world, in which you must create a visual representation of not your own, but another persons." The request is interesting due to the fact that I was creating something based off of someone else's work. All of this was to be done in Tinkercad.
Besides that, we were to make sound files of our own.
DEFINE
The problem that I want to solve is that I want to give the viewer a very clear vision of the world that the audio file portrays. When asked to create an Audio File of my Own, I went with a very dense and oceanic world of machines. To me, I had a clear view of what I had wanted, but my partner's audio file was something that I needed time to think of.
IDEATE
My partner presented me with her sound file, "The Underworld", and as I listened to it, I noticed that I felt like a deep and dark area. I imagined a dark cave with magma rocks lining the walls. I felt that it was too basic, and as I listened to it, I heard distorted and creepy roars of distant beasts, When listening, I thought of another idea. If this was the Underworld, that means it is a area littered by horrific structures created by evil craftsmen, areas where suffering is emphasized by pools of gore and mountains of pain and misery.
This was a sketch I had done beforehand, and I wanted to bring out the old myths of the underworld, especially with the pillars of stone and marble, which were ransacked and ruined. To me, the Underworld was a land of ruined structures, almost showing itself as an insult to the structures that man has built. It is meant to show that not only the person that is living there is in endless torment, but the world around suffers a decaying pain as well.
I wanted to add caves and other systems to emphasize that there were many crevasses in the rocks. If one were in this area, there would be many places to hide, but it never meant that they were safe. Listening to the audio gave me that vibe, and I imagined a temporary feeling of suspense in a dark and hidden place, only for it to be cut short by a horrific roar of a not too far off beast.
PROTOTYPE
I worked quickly on Tinkercad, creating a world of spikes and ruined buildings, and I even popped in a fountain of boiling blood just for kicks, here is a video not only showcasing my Partner's amazing sound file, but my interpretation created over Tinkercad as well.
I utilized many of the different shapes to create a simplistic, but horrific world.
Also, I created a sound file of my own, one that is supposed to represent Underwater Machines. It was created out of sounds from Freesounds, and overall, turned out really well in the end.
In the End, Dr. Round found my design to be quite well, which made me happy, because honestly Tinkercad's simplistic designs made me feel as if I needed to go overboard with it. She brought up how the file really complimented the piece itself, and that the piece was well put together. I was happy, because as fun as this project was, I felt that it could have been much harder.
